What BMP is
BMP stores pixels uncompressed. A 4000×3000 image is 36 MB whatever it shows. It exists because it is trivial to read and write, which old Windows software, scanners and some embedded systems still rely on.
Use BMP when
- Feeding a legacy tool or device that only accepts BMP.
- Intermediate files you will delete right away.
Avoid BMP when
- Anything stored or shared: PNG is lossless and a fraction of the size; JPG or WebP for photos.
How ConvertX handles BMP
- Reads and writes BMP on every platform.
- In the compressor's "Smaller files" mode a BMP is saved as PNG, so nothing lossy is applied to graphics.
- BMP carries no EXIF, so "Keep photo details" has nothing to copy.
Extensions: .bmp. Metadata: no EXIF is written by ConvertX.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my BMP 30 MB?
No compression: width × height × 3 bytes. Converting to PNG keeps every pixel at a fraction of the size.
BMP to PNG or BMP to JPG?
PNG for screenshots and graphics (lossless). JPG for photographs (much smaller, slight loss).
